microphone not picking up any sound on HP Pavillion dv6000

The microphone on my HP laptop(see subject header for type) is not picking up sound, apparently drivers are up to date, and it says the device is working properly, but clearly it isnt . any help would be much appreciated.

I recommend you to try with System Restore once, not recovery and once check your microphone settings.

i have tried every suggestion on the HP troubleshooting page, one can only assume this is a hardware fault????
