Which OS are you using? Check the device manager, check for yellow exclamation mark in audio device.

Which audio driver are you using?
Try to uninstall the current audio driver from "Programs and Features" in control panel, then reboot.
After reboot it may prompt for audio driver, choose cancel, and install this driver

I have the same system and did have problems like this, now it is worse. The sound bar pops up on screen by it self and makes a constant clicking noise. The touch sensitivity bar is unresponsive except that if you hold you fingers on it, the sound bar will go away while your fingers are on it but as soon as you remove your fingers the sound bar pops up again.
Any suggestions out there?

@steller
You may have a mix sound driver in your machine now. Wish I could provided you a tool to clean uninstall the IDT sound driver.
Lets try this way,
1. Uninstall the current audio driver from control panel, reboot.
2. After reboot it will try to find audio driver automatically, choose cancel and go to device manager see for audio device, right click and choose uninstall and reboot again.
3. install the latest IDT sound driver as above link.
@abchutch
The OSD (On Screen Display) Volume bar is a different issue.
You may try reinstall HP MediaSmart SmartMenu, here
I dont have your model please try latest version or if does not work the old one may work.
Try it and remember to uninstall and reboot before trying a new one.
