I am having hp compaq presario F739 au, and was working fine. One fine morning the speaker icon in task bar was missing, there was no volume control available..From the device manager ,I found in Sound, Video and Game controllers
Realtek AC 97 was not there.I tried few things but could not get the sound back. Even system rstore did not work.
Local expert told me that HP laptop sound missing is a difficult problem and he could not solve it without formating.
I am not sure if that is the only way out .
Is it possible to download Realtek ac 97? and install it in my laptop running om windows XP (sp2). ![]()

Hi:
According to the product specs for your notebook, you have the Conexant smart audio chip in your notebook.
I would read the XP downgrade guide at the link below and under Moderate Models, look at the audio section.
You needed to have installed the MS UAA driver and then try the modified Conexant Audio driver by Silver.

I tried the installation suggested by you, but got the message against Connexant HD- Audio smart audio 221 (code 10-This device can't start). with a yellow mark in the device manager list.
MS UAA driver was installed first followed by modified connexant audio driver. HOPE THERE IS SOME OTHER WAY TO GET RID OF CODE 10.
(i also don't have task bar spear(audio) icon still.)

Hi:
I suggest you go back and retrace what you did initially to get your notebook working on XP.
Paul
