why are sounds splitting between my headphones and speakers?

i have an HP Pavilion dv6700 laptop running Windows Vista, and when i plug headphones into my laptop system sounds come through the headset but music or other audio still comes through the built in speakers.  i have tried restoring all of the audio settings to default and updating the drivers but this problem persists. how do i fix it?
