Re: I can't get sound through TV when hooked up via HDMI

Hey you probably already found a solution to your problem since you posted this comment a long time ago. But incase you haven't. Here's the answer to your problem. I hope it helps.

  1. In order for the audio to work properly on the HDTV, the desired device must be configured as the default device within device manager of the computer. To do so:
    1. In Windows® XP:
      1. Note! Before configuring the default audio device, the following Microsoft driver should first be installed: Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver
      2. After installation of the UAA driver, go to Start
      3. Select Control Panel
      4. Select Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices
      5. Select Sounds and Audio Devices
      6. Click on the Audio tab
      7. In the first section labeled Sound playback, select the device that you want the audio to output from
      8. Click on OK to save your settings
    2. In Windows Vista®:
      1. Right-click the speaker icon
      2. Select Playback Devices from the options
      3. Right-click on the device that you want the audio to output from
      4. Set it as the default audio device
      5. Click on OK to save your settings
    3. In Windows® 7®:
      1. Go to Start button
      2. Select Control Panel
      3. Select Hardware and Sound
      4. Select Sound
      5. Click the Playback tab
      6. Select the device that you want the audio to output from
      7. Click Set Default
      8. Click OK to save your settings

Great! Had a similar issue: connected a monitor to my laptop (via HDMI) and couldn't hear the sound anymore; followed your instructions and solved the problem! Thank you very much for your post.

Re: I can't get sound through tv when hooked up via HDMI from laptop

What OS are you running ?

Does your TV as the sound source show up in the Control Panel when your HDMI cable is plugged in. Is it greyed  out ?

What is the video card make in your laptop, eg. NVIDIA or ATI ?

I am also going to assume that you tried the solution in this thread and it ddn't work or you didn't under stand it ???
