So, this may have been from my laptop (HP Pavilion, Windows 7) slipping from my lap and my headphone jack ripping out of the port too hard, but when I plug any headphones in, sound still plays from the speakers as well as from the headphones. When I test 'independent headphones' on the device manager, sound only plays through the headphones, but it will otherwise play through both. I have no idea what to do at this point, so if anyone could help that would be fantastic

I don't see a set defaults button in the hardware and sound window.
If you mean setting the defaults in the playback devices window, that doesn't seem to do anything.

Alright, so I did a bit of looking around and it seems as though the jack isn't reading the insertion of the headphones as just that, and is instead assuming it to be some other device and thus not working propely. Does anyone know how to fix that, or is it a physical problem?

I have an hp laptop and I am almost completely computer illiterate. My speakers do not play any sound but when i plug the headphones in, the sound blasts from the speakers and the headphones. I have updated the drivers and when I checked the sound affair in the control panel, the icon with the speaker says, "speaker and headphones."
This is like hacking into the main frame of NASA!
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I see that you are having problems with the sound on your HP computer. I would like to help with this issue but I need some information.
Can you provide the model and product number of the computer? Here is a link that shows how to find that information.
