@ColeMaresca,

What is the model of the notebook?
NOTE: Do not provide the serial number.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, and open Sound.

Right-click the device area and select show disconnected and inactive devices.
Did anything show in the list?

Go to Start, right-click Computer, select manage, and select device manager on the left.

Expand sound, video and game controllers. Is the sound card listed here? If so, open it and let me know the status message it has.
Also, were there any unknown devices listed? If so, did any of them identify as a sound card?

I am having the EXACT same problem. It started yesterday afternoon in the middle of using my laptop. All I was doing was using facebook and suddenly the sound stopped working. Nothing I've been able to find on the forums is fixing it and I've even rolled back, etc. I HAVE TO get this fixed because of work. Please help!!

Hello NikkiWall.  I understand you've lost sound on your notebook.

Which notebook do you own?  If you could provide the product number that would be very helpful for locating specific software for your notebook.  If you're unsure where this is located take a look here.

Is the device still listed in Device Manager?  If so you should try removing the driver and allowing Windows to reinstall it.

  1. Click Start, type "Device Manager," and press Enter.
  2. Expand the "Sound, video, and game controllers" section.
  3. Right click on your sound device select "Uninstall."  If prompted remove the driver only.
  4. Reboot your notebook.  When Windows loads it will reinstall the driver.
  5. Verify whether your sound has returned and post the result.

I hope you have a great day!

Hello rcoste,

I see that you are having problems with the sound on your HP computer. I would like to help with this issue but I need some information.

Can you provide the model and product number of the computer? Here is a link that shows how to find that information.

How long have you had problems with the sound? Are you getting any error messages?
