Do the ctrl, alt, delete button once to bring up the task manager.  If SMOSD is running, stop it.  That's what the volume bar is called.

I see the SM

OSD but IO can't seem to shut it off. Could you please tell me how to do that? Thank you very much.

I have a work around that works with my dv7. Just start an instance of media player. Keep the program running, but it can be minimized. As long as it is running you don't have the display pop-up.

That mediaplayer runaround doesn't work for me at all.  I do get to listen to my music, when the volume stays up, though....  up, down, down, down..... 😞

Have you tried updating the bios? I recently purchased a dv4-2145dx and had this issue when the computer first logs into windows. I updated the bios and it seems like that fixed it. Go to HP's website and search for drivers and downloads for your model, you'll find a bios update there if available. Run that and see if that helps.

I JUST got my HP computer back from HP (had to have the hard drive replaced less than 2 months out of warranty) and less than a week later it had this heinous problem you guys are talking about.

For anyone who'd like to see what this looks like, here is a video.  Having this happen and not knowing how to fix it is beyond annoying!!!

Here is the thing which works for all models of HP..

You do not need to uninstall anything, neither remove battery..

To disable the volume bar popup,

1. press ctrl+r (Run)

2.Type "msconfig" and press enter

3. A window will appear. Now switch to "Start up" tab.

disable popup

4.Search HPMediaSmart SmartMenu in the list and uncheck the tick mark.

5.Click appy and the system will ask for a restart.. Restart and problem solved..!!!
