6735b won't start please help

I have a HP 6735b that i got from my school and I have a problem. The notebook will not turn on, by which I mean when I press the power button the computer doesn't boot up and none of the lights come on or flash. I tried charging it but it had no effect the light that comes on to say its charging didn't even light up. As some extra information I have been getting a message when I turn on the laptop that my battery has extremely low performance so all I can assume is that there is nothing powering the laptop. Is my problem just a battery issue because I can easily replace that or is it a MCG larger issue, please help me and describe my problem in simple terms so I can understand thankyou.
