A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing...

To say I am a bit of a 'noob' would be an understatement. My wife has a HP Pavilion dv9500, running Vista Home Premium. Her CD-drive stopped working and I researched the problem to find a fix. I read in forums I could delete registry files, and I did, but they were the wrong ones. So, her laptop shut down and would not boot past the initial startup screen.

I removed the HDD to see if everything was wiped off the HD, and it was. So, I decided to reinstall Vista, only to find out I did not have the recovery disk. I made a bootable USB drive and tried loading a fresh install of Vista that way, but I keep getting the following message, after hitting "install now":

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step."

So, I downloaded drivers for both the dv9500 and the dv9628nr, because both are on the bottom sticker. However, none of the drivers would show up as compatible, or show up at all, actually. What am I doing wrong?!

Also, it is worth mentioning that I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium, because I plan on installing it after I get the current problem fixed. The cd-drive lights up and sounds like it is spinning, but it doesn't show up when hitting F9...

Do you have the Windows 7 dvd in the drive when booting?

Have you tried tapping the F11 key immediately after powering on too see if you can boot into recovery to reinstall Vista?

Yes, I do have the Windows 7 cd in while booting. There is nothing for the computer to recover in to, because the hard drive is wiped clean..

Hi:

If you burned the Windows 7 ISO download to a DVD yourself, there is a 99% chance that is your problem.

I recommend you re-burn the DVD at the slowest possible burn speed, and try again loading W7 from the DVD drive.

If the DVD drive is broken, get an external one or get a used but working internal one on eBay.

There should be plenty of them for sale.

I did not, I actually purchased Windows 7 from Best Buy. Could it be the hard drive is in the wrong format?

Re: A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing...

No. The notebook should boot from the DVD, and Windows 7 will automatically format the disk and install.

The drive can be completely unformatted and it should still work.

Since is is a factory disk, a bad DVD burn isn't the issue.

Also if you bought the upgrade version of windows 7, you need to have a qualifying operating system installed (vista or XP), or windows 7 will not install.

See if this is of any help to get Vista installed via the flash drive.

Well then, you should have no probelm.

Borrow a USB DVD drive from somone and load Windows 7.

I see several dv9500 DVD RW drives for sale on eBay.
