My netbook has crashed after an HP prompted update. When powering up the logo screen prompts me to hit "enter" to complete startup but has done nothing for a half hour. All thts happeneing is a mius type of sign in the far upper left hand corner.  Suggestions?

If I am understanding you correctly you are having trouble restarting after an update.  If this is the case I would restart and press F11 to go into the recovery manager, from here go to system restore (not recovery) and restore back to a time before the update.  This should resolve the issue.
