Beginning recovery, I got this error message..."CDBOOT:MEMORY OVERFLOW ERROR"

[ Edited ]

HP G71-340US NOTEBOOK P/N VM114UA#ABA

New hard drive for factory reset from recovery disk for Windows 7 / 64-bit

WD 750GB SATA 5400rpm 8mb

Message after installing new hard drive and inserting recovery disk one

Why did I get this error message?

Restarted the laptop (several times), pressed "esc" for start up menu, selected F11 to begin recovery from disk one, 3rd time the charm, selected "Factory Reset" and followed directions to "Facory Image Recovery Preparation". Now in the process of "Reformatting the Windows Partition of your hard drive disk"...

Have I done something wrong? Are there any future concerns with this cdboot-memory overflow error?

Re: Beginning recovery, I got this error message..."CDBOOT:MEMORY OVERFLOW ERROR"

Hi:

Sometimes the recovery disks don't work. It could be anything.

I have a workaround if you can still read the 25 character Windows 7 product key on the Microsoft COA sticker on the bottom of your notebook.

If your notebook came with Windows 7 and you can read the 25 character product key you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows (Pro, Home) that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on the bottom of your notebook.

You must also select the language of the installation that came with your PC, or the product key won't work.

Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program, and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow.

Use the 25 character product key on the bottom of the notebook to activate the installation.

Then go to the support and driver page for your notebook to install the drivers you need.

Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

Thanks Paul! As it turned out, the recovery disk I have installed on the new hard drive right on the mark.... but the information you provided here is an alternative to keep, in the event of something else (the gods forbid) going wrong.

Re: Beginning recovery, I got this error message..."CDBOOT:MEMORY OVERFLOW ERROR"

You're very welcome.

You may want to burn the DVD of the Windows OS you have now.

Who knows how long these downloads will be available?

Once Windows 8 comes out later this year or whenever, you can bet these downloads will no longer be available.
