I know the hard drive is toast in my dv4. Can I use the recovery discs I made when I got the computer to load a new hard drive?

Yes you can. That is the purpose of having the recovery media.
Replace your hard disk with one that is of equal or larger capacity. That does not mean use a larger than 750 GB hard disk unless yours had one installed when delivered.

Why then after receiving the Factory restore Disks, can I not restore the new Hard Drive? Tech support says I must have the SAME size 320g HDD and not a 500g drive.
