And...the new discs didn't work either. Clearly there is something wrong with the laptop. I am going to have to return it. This really sucks because i needed it for next weekend. No way to get a replacement by then. Off to find a laptop from a company that has better quality control!

Ok...I have to thank DavidPK!!!! His suggestion was our last chance effort and it worked. The hardware was fine, the installation of the os was bad by HP. All the recovery disks were bad also. HP has a major problem there!
We downloaded a clean version of win7, installed, then added the drivers as needed and I am up and running!

I can't stress enough how disappointed i am with HP to have such problems with their quality control that they could send out two bad sets of recovery disks after a bad install of the OS. If it wasn't for David and my friend and local tech guru, I would have sent the computer back and bought something else!
