Error 1002 when about to reinstall Vista to new hard drive-pavilion dv9500

Hey there,

First, a bit of background information:

  • The computer (17" HP Pavilion dv9500) is about 4-5 years old.  Its warranty expired in 2010.
  • It's been sent back to HP before (about 2 1/2 years ago) within warranty for a defective NVIDIA card that fried its motherboard and has been working perfectly since those parts were replaced.
  • But lately, some of my files have been going missing and my computer boots up out of hibernate on its own and shuts down unexpectedly.  About two weeks ago, the hard drive that came with the system (a WD 3200BEVT Scorpio Blue 2.5 SATA) began to rattle and click erratically and failed, showing me the 'Operating System' not found error upon booting.  I have no reason to believe this was caused by anything but a dying hard drive.
  • About three days ago, I was able to boot it back up into the operating system temporarily, in which I created a set of recovery discs successfully using the manager.  The Windows version in question is Vista Home Premium 64bit.  The machine is labeled as Windows 7 compatible.

I purchased a hard drive from Amazon, a WD Scorpio Blue 5000BPVT 2.5 SATA and replaced the dead drive with it.  In BIOS, the hard drive does not read to have any errors when put through the diagnostic test.  However, when running the System Recovery Manager, I ran into Error 1002 when it is upon the third and last disc and about to write onto the hard drive.

Now, when I attempt to retry it, the computer boots up and after the F-key option screen it just remains blank with a blinking cursor.

From what I've been able to find on the site with other situations similar to mine, I seem to have several possibilities as to why this has gone wrong.

  • Either my recovery discs are bad because the hard drive upon which the recovery partition was on at the time of creating them was bad,
  • The recovery discs were bad anyway because the recovery information on the partition has long since expired,
  • My new hard drive lacks something called a DMI utility that is conflicting with its compatibility to my machine despite being otherwise compatible,
  • Or perhaps my computer is just old and fecacked and there's nothing that can be done.

As mentioned before, I no longer am under warranty.  I've already spent money I did not have on the new hard drive and now I'm worrying that it was for naught.  I would just like to know if anyone, after hearing my particular situation, can pinpoint the issue so I can route my course from there.  If it's a matter of needing to order new recovery discs I think I can manage that.  In fact, if a clean install of Windows would do, my friend has offered me her extra copy of Windows 7 because it turned out she didn't need it.

But if it's this proprietary utility, well, I probably can't afford the cost of having it sent in to be tattooed out of warranty, and at that point the question is if it's just better to save up for a new machine.  Which is a shame because I was really hoping this one would last me at least until I was done with undergraduate school.  As you can imagine, not having my computer has greatly crippled my ability to handle six classes and my part time job in the heat of final exams season.

Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

That model hard drive is an "Advanced Format" drive, you need to return it and purchase a hard drive that is not advanced format type, then recovery should complete without errors.

HP recovery discs do not work with AF drives, recovery fails at the stage where it creates additional partitions for hp_tools and recovery partitions because it does not understand AF hard drives, so it fails to create or write to those partitions.

Ahhhh, that makes sense. thank you. So, just hypothetically speaking, after reading the article, if I installed the clean Windows 7 that my friend offered me, would it work then? Or no?

Yes a regular W7 installation disc should install with no errors.

The only reason I ask is because it seems like it would be harder to find a non advanced format drive than it would be to install a clean copy of Windows since I would likely upgrade to 7 in the future either way. Thank you very much for your help, I'll give that a try. :smileyhappy:

Worked like a good luck charm.  Thank you! :smileyhappy:

Now my graphics driver isn't being recognized as itself (NVIDIA 8600MGS) and instead as a Standard VGA adapter, but that's the least of my problems.  xD

Go to the Link below, click the "drivers and software" icon, then type in your model number in the search box and then hit enter, when the page loads select your Operating System. Your drivers page will appear.
