I bought my HP notebook 5 months ago from a friend and i loved how reliable it was but just recently it stopped booting. I ran a couple tests and found out that the hard drive gave out on me. I believe it said "Short DTS: Failed" and "Failure ID: 9C137L-50D63R-XD7Q21-60Q103". So i went to bestbuy and bought a new hard drive but the problem is that i dont have any recovery software to restore all the factory files and settings into the new Hard drive. I tried calling HP support but all they have are recovery dvds but my notebook does NOT have a cd/dvd drive. So i came to these forums to ask what are my possibilities to install windows 7 and all the factory settings into the new hard drive? Does anybody have the recovery files that i can download so i can put it into a usb and restore from there? If anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi:
I think I can be of help...
Try this workaround:
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

Now, instead of burning these to a DVD, use the Windows 7 USB flash drive installation tool available at the link below and follow the instructions on the page to install.
You will need a 4 GB flash drive or larger.

You're very welcome.
I have never tried the USB flash tool myself, so I will be interested in how it works when you reply.
I did download the tool but I do not have a spare 4 GB flash drive to test out an installation with.
The files work on a DVD and the product key works just fine.
Worst case scenario is you shell out $30 for an external USB DVD-RW drive and install via a DVD.

It worked! ![]()
Thank you Paul I really appreciate you helping me with my problem. After i got out of work I bought an 8gb flashdrive from OfficeDepot, got home, did everything that was described in the links and it booted and installed windows 7. Now all I need to do is install all the HP drives and whatnot. Thanks again man I owe u a beer haha.
