yes because I can't use any of the preinstalled software (Adobe, etc).
OS is Vista 32 bit. Not sure how to find the architecture.

Don't mean to sound vague. I just thought it had something to do the the starting and stopping because of the DVD drive.
I am totally unfamilar with what is going on because I have done this before and have had no problems.

The architecture is the 32 bit part. I am sorry that I cannot be of more help, but this is not really my area. I wish you luck in finding someone who can actually help, besides telling you to recover again.
