New HD Not Detected

HP/Compaq Presario V6000 factory 120 GB hard drive died.  Ran BIOS diagnostics and it failed after Quick Test.  Replaced HD with new 250 GB HD (not a refurb).  Ran BIOS diagnostics twice and passed both times.  WinXP installer states that there is no HD and refuses to start install (thus the two BIOS diagnostics runs!).  All else in BIOS seems OK.  Any ideas on where to go from here?

Thanks,

Dave

Are you using XP Recovery Disks or a retail XP cd? Is this machine an Intel or AMD processor?

My assumptions are this is an Intel machine and you are using a retail XP cd. XP doesn't have the SATA driver for Intel based machines so it doesn't 'see' the hdd.You can disable "Native SATA" in BIOS setup to enable XP to install_if this V6000 is below the V6500 series, such as V6120 or V6410.etc. Models begining at the V6500 level don't have the option in BIOS.

Another scenario would be using an XP cd without at least SP1 on an AMD machine.Anything above SP1 will see the hdd on AMD machines.
