I have 2 Presario C769US notebooks purchased at the same time. I created recovery disks from 1 of the computers. I'll call it Computer A. First question: Can these disks be used to recover for Computer B which was not used to create the disks?
The problem I'm having is that I had to replace the hard drive on Computer B. I used the recovery disks from computer A. It seemed to work, but I am not able to do a Windows Update an Computer B. It looks for the update, but doesn't find any updates. This is a problem because some programs require Netframe. The windows update doesn't work to find any updates. I have tried recovery many times. Can anyone help?

Hi:
I can't help with the issue you are having but you can manually download net framework standalone packages from MS, so at least the programs that need MS Net Framework can run.
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?
You can also download and install service packs and other security updates in this manner by doing a search on the MS Downloads website until you can get your WU situation resolved.

Can recovery disks made from one computer be used on another computer if the 2 computers are identical? Both computers are Compaq C769US with Vista OS. They were bought together. I'm wondering if I need recovery disks from the computer I'm trying to recover. Also, can I replace the hard drive with a larger hard drive and use the recovery disks? Do the recovery disks only work with the original hard drive?

Hi:
I don't know the answer to either of your questions because I have never tried to do either.
I have only used factory recovery disks on HP business PC's and notebooks and those will work on the same model and different size hard drives.
I didn't think you could use a set of recovery disks you made for one PC on another--even if it was the exact model.
You'll just have to try and see what happens. Same for a bigger hard drive. I don't think it will work but I don't see where you have anything to lose by giving it a try.
According to the HP website you can order factory recovery disks for your notebook, but when you click on the link to do so, the link is dead. So, I would call them and see if you can still order them. They cost $16.00 if they do.
If not, you can get a set here for $27.00

I did use recovery disks from one computer to another except the 2nd computer has a bigger hard drive. It did work except for this Windows Update not working. I'm wondering if using disks from one computer to another is the reason Windows Update does not work? What do you think, Paul?
Thanks for your help.

Hi:
I wish I could help you out but I'd only be guessing.
My guess would be that it worked (or you would have had other issues besides just WU), and there is some other issue preventing W/U from working. Did you update to IE9 and try that?

I haven't tried IE9. I'll give it a try.
