Recovery Manager provides backup with empty folders

My girlfriend's Compaq Presario was recently infected with some sort of virus which made accessing anything impossible, even in safe mode.  System Restore was also a bust.  Instead of seeking advice from anyone who knew more than me, I decided to perform a recovery with back up.  When prompted to back up the files to a partition, no drives were listed except the DVD drive.  So I plugged in my external and the back up process seemed to work just fine.  I then unplugged it when it was finished and it began to install Windows.  The fresh install worked just fine, so I plugged in my external and began to transfer the backup files. The recovery manager unpacked all the data with no issues save one:  Every folder is empty!  I have a feeling the data is there, since if it were empty folders to begin with, it wouldn't have taken so long to unpack.  I have since attempted to access them using Power ISO with limited success.  Please someone help!

Re: Recovery Manager provides backup with empty folders

Copy the wim files from dvd to the hard drive, then use 7 zip to unpack them, see if that helps get the files.

Re: Recovery Manager provides backup with empty folders

Tried 7 zip and it still is giving me empty folders.  Since the .wim files are on my external, I figured I would try to just extract it to the same folder on that drive.  I can see all the extracted files when I use the 7 zip file manager, but empty folders when I try to open them in Windows.

Re: Recovery Manager provides backup with empty folders

Windows has them marked as hidden files, go to folder options and "show hidden files and folders", you should be able to see them now.

Re: Recovery Manager provides backup with empty folders

None of them are marked as hidden.  It makes me wonder if they aren't unpacking as some kind of short cut.  The last time I was able to access all the files, but as soon as I unplugged my external, the folders were empty.  The thing is I've tried it every which way.  I unpacked it to the desktop, I unpacked it to my external, I moved all the .wim files to the desktop and unpacked it there, but all with the same results.

What is the p/n of the Presario Notebook and version of Recovery Manager?

What is the installed operating system.

Is the recovery process you are using to recover you data as stated in this HP web document?

I give no guarantee this will work for you, but you should give this a try. Try it on a copy of your backup archive, not on the original one.

Sorry. I can't help you with that. The set that I have is for my dv7-4180es loaner laptop. Each set is specifically tailored to a particular laptop/mini/elitebook or desktop PC. My set won't work in your notebook.

You will have to use the recovery disk set you created or purchase a set from HP. You can also purchase a set from HP Partners.

Please answer the question from my previous posts.

Help in the forum is cdependentent on it being a two way street. Selectively answering questions that provide troubleshooting information is definitely not helping us to help you.

Re: Recovery Manager provides backup with empty folders

Sorry if this sounds stupid... but nobody mentioned using the EXE that should be in the same directory. You are just supposed to launch the recoverymgr.exe from the same folder. Read this...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03056985

If you have already done this and the restored files/folders at C:\System Recovery Files are all blank... then I am stumped too.
