Hello, I have just bought this same laptop from steveinnorthants on a popular auction website, and was wanting to follow through with your advice. However, after entering a password three times all the laptop does is switch itself off... any other ideas?

This problem has now been solved!
After reading through the rest of this thread and scouring the internet I found that some HPs only show you the error code if you press F2 or F12 before the third time of entering the password. This gave me the code, allowing me to use a link further up this thread to solve the problem.
