HP Pavilion dv7-4177nr Entertainment Notebook PC
Windows 7 Home Premium
Failure ID: M88DAF-5B763E-XD002K-60VE03
Hard Disk 1
Start-Up Test: Failed
Product ID: XH121UA#A3A
Problem started occuring following an update to the BIOS. Computer does not boot to safe mode. Cannot run HP System Recovery (F11). I tried rolling back the BIOS, but that didn't work either.
What does the Failure ID mean?

Hi
The failure ID indicates that your Hard Drive has failed and will need to replace the part on the unit.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.
Let us know how it goes!

I also got the Short DST : Failed
Failure ID : GTXM62-5JB63U-XD002K-60U703
It is out of warranty. I removed the hard drive and it worked fine as an external drive.
What can I do to fix it?
Or
Must I replace it with another hard?
Thank you for your input.

I would like to know when the hard drive was removed from the case and working as an external hard drive was it located with the same sides being the top and bottom as it was when it was installed internally. The manufacturer stress that the hard drives are not to be stored on end. For instance my computer has the hard drive installed on end. This is in direct contrast with the instructions set forth by the hard drive manufacturer, Western Digital. If they are not supposed to be stored in a certain position I would assume that they would also not be operated in that position as well.Apparently it was not designed to function and have a normal lifecycle if operated that way.
