System Recovery for HP Pavilion dv7-1464nr 4

Hi I found you by looking on here in similar situations and I am wondering and hoping if someone can help me. I have the above laptop and it completely crashed.the computer powers on and sounds like it is running however the screen remains black. The led lights on cap locks and above the number pad inks four times continuously. I called HP and the gentleman sent me System Recovery discs and I power on the computer with the disc in the drive and pressing F11 and nothing happens...do you have any suggestions.... Thank you so much for your prompt response Katie

4 blinks of the caps and num lock indicates the graphics (video) controller has failed, recovery will not fix it, it needs a motherboard replacement which is expensive, is it under warranty?

Re: System Recovery for HP Pavilion dv7-1464nr 4

I have had the same problem 3 times. It turns out that the early Pavillions had a serious design flaw which would cause overheating and a consequent melting down of the motherboard. I had to send it in for service three times under the warranty. The first two times they fixed the problem and sent it back, the third time as they were swamped with other computers with this problem their supplier was having a hard time procuring the large number of replacement motherboards. They sent me a new computer. So far so good. I sincerely hope that yours is still under warranty as this will be very expensive. In this case, it will probably be cheaper to buy another computer. Sorry for the bleak news.
