The "recovery" section on my computer (pavillion dv7 1468nr) is almost full. How do I clear it?

I have made backup disc and "recovery" discs (13 disc set) and the "recovery"  section on my computer is still full.  I keep getting messages that tell me to clear my "trash", but it is empty.  Is there some way I can clear the hidden files on my computer and reset the recovery disc?  My computer stalls and freezes b/c of this problem.  Help me. please.
