Will recovery discs work with 110 netbook with non-HP external drive?(new HDD)

I have a one-year-old HP 110-3098  (no disc drive) netbook with heavy usage.  I plan on heavier use.  I use an external H-L GH10L disc drive and expect to replace the Seagate Momentus 5400 hard drive and start over.  I burned a set of recovery and image DVDs, but I'm concerned that I cannot load them from an external drive when I install a new hard drive.  Anyone try this?
