Hi Bill,

As you have Windows 7, there is a simple work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.

If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD. These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.

Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the underside of your notebook when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Re: bootmgr is missing

That procedure should absolutely work, because....you have actual disks that can be read by your laptop! :smileyhappy: Of course you can install Windows from Windows disks. Your computer is likely fine. HP's restore disks are defective. And since HP refuses to include Windows disks with your laptop when you buy it.... Go ahead and try it, and then post back about how bad the restore disks must be since the Windows disks work without a hitch! $100+ for a set of Windows disks- AND you cannot use 'Upgrade' disks... I sent a letter to HP's Board of Directors about this problem. They likely will not respond or take any action, but we'll quote it in the article.

Re: bootmgr is missing

I am just wondering if anyone found a solution to the missing bootmgr error message.  I am actually looking to restore my desktop to factory settings and missing bootmgr is the error message I am receiving.  My warranty expired in February!  I called HP to order the recovery discs, but I have been reading the forum and it appears that no one is finding a solution with the recovery discs. Does anyone have any suggestions that actually will work.

Thanks,

Monica

Re: bootmgr is missing

Hi Monica,

Provided the issue is not with the Hard Drive, the following procedure is a popular alternative.

Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ) - an example of a COA label is Here.

You can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the exact same version that originally came with your PC ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.

Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit

Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS.

Additional drivers you may need can be found by entering the Model No. of your PC Here.

Re: Update: Re: bootmgr is missing

Then the message should be, "Hard drive needs to be replaced"  not "BOOTMGR IS MISSING". What the heck is a "BOOTMGR" anyway?

Re: bootmgr is missing

I'm done dicking around with my defective Hewlett Packard device. I'm just going to buy into a new brand as soon as I do some research  to see what is working for folks .... with some serious focus on the customer service aspect! HP products and its customer service has gone into the toilet.
