compaq presario cq 70. will not startup only black screen and flashing cursor.

When I startup my Compaq presario CQ70 I only get a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.

Enter BIOS setup by tapping/holding the F10 key immediately after powering on the laptop.Use Diagnostics to test your hdd.

I have an HP G60 with the same issue. I have run ALL diagnostics on it and all come back fully functional, yet all I get on startup is the black screen and cursor. The hard disk is fine, and HPs don't come with recovery discs anymore, I guess they are too cheap to include them!
