I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC dv7-1245. The key is above the num lock key - it has "home" which works when I press it but under that it has "prt sc" but I don't know what to hit along with it to make it work. I tried the shift key, the alt key, the fn key and nothing works. I even looked in the manual and those keys above the num lock key are not even referenced.

print screen copies a screen shot of you desktop at the time you press it to the clipboard, if you do a screenshot and then open MS Paint, you can then paste it into that program to see what you captured.
alt+print screen only captures the window that has focus, not the whole desktop.
It does not actually print to your printer until you paste it in a program like MS paint and then print from there.

Some laptops have the Fn key set to enabled by default, what this means is the printscreen key will do something else, you will need to enter the bios and change the Fn behavior, then the printscreen key should work.
Set it to disabled
After changing this:To use the action keys you will have to use Fn + F2,3,4,5,6,7 etc to do certain things like screen brightness.
How to enter and use the bios (system setup)

I have no problem using fn+print screen. The problem is only ever takes an image of desktop or whatever is behind the current image that I am trying to capture an image of. How do I select the current window or program that I'm in to capture an image? My friends are able to do this running the same program (an MMOGP) on their computer and yet I cannot with my Pavillion laptop.

to capture active windows the key combo is ctrl+alt+fn+print sc
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
