DVD/cd player not working

[ Edited ]

My 2 yr old DV9700 laptop dvd is not playing. My lightscribe dvd/cd player just stopped working. Says no disc found even though it has power, the disc is spinning and the light is on. It is not recognizing the drive in my device manager!  I can not find the install disc.  Not sure what to do from here, it has power but says no disc found and will not play when i push the quickplay button.  computer has windows vist 64 bit.

Any help would be GREAT!

THANKS

Re: DVD/cd player not working

Hi,

You could try running Microsofts automated fixit on the link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Re: DVD/cd player not working

Hi Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately it did not work. The scan said the drive/device is not detected. The drive does not show up under device manager. Again, when you put a dvd/cd in it spins but does not find the disc.

Any other ideas. It has power. i read maybe a BIOS problem?

Re: DVD/cd player not working

Hi again,

Go Device Manager and open the tree IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.  Double click the first channel ( channel 0 ) and select the Advanced Settings tab.  You are looking for an entry called ATAPI Cdrom.  If it is not on the first channel, close the window and double click the next channel and select the Advanced Settings tab.  Repeat this until you see the entry you're looking for.  Now close the window with the box displaying ATAPI Cdrom, Right click on the channel you just opened and select uninstall.  Again do not delete drivers if asked.  Once uninstalled, reboot your PC.

Let me know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Re: DVD/cd player not working

Hi David - I'm having the same issues with my 3 month old Pavillion DV7. I think it was a Microsoft update that did me in (like that should surprise me) I worked my way through all the troubleshooting and tried what you suggested in your last post. None of that worked.

Any other suggestions?

TIA,

Deb

Re: DVD/cd player not working

Hi David

I went thru the steps you listed. There are 4 channels. However no ATAPI cdrom. Rather the last 2 channels both have (ATA Disk  ultra DMA Mode 5.)

Any ideas from this point. This is driving me CRAZY!

Thanks

Tim

Re: DVD/cd player not working

Hi tkratcliffe,

Start your PC while tapping away at f10 to enter your Bios Menu.  Does your CD/DVD drive show in the list of bootable devices?

Look forward to hearing from you,

Hi

Yes the CD/DVD shows up in the bootable devices and it says (enabled).

Re: DVD/cd player not working

Hi,

Disable the device in the bios, then boot up Windows.  Now reboot, re-enable the device in the bios and boot up Windows again.  Does it work or at least show up in Device Manager?

Let me know.

Best wishes,
