Hi,
The first thing to try is Microsofts automated fixit on the link below.
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_probl
See if this helps.
Best wishes,

I have a dv7 3079wm. HP MediaSmart doesn't detect or play Dvds or Blu Rays. I can get my dvd to play with media player, so I know it's not the drive.
I've tried your solution and I still can't get it to work..do you have any other suggestions?

Hi,
Try downloading and installing Revo Uninstaller on the link below.
http://www.revouninstaller.com/download-freeware-v
Run the program to uninstall HP Mediasmart DVD. Right click on the entry and select uninstall accepting the program defaults. During the process you may be asked to delete some registry entries, if you are, select all and delete. Repeat this for any left over files and folders
Next download and install ccleaner on the link below.
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
First run the file clean up utility and then run the registry cleaner making sure to backup when asked.
Reboot the computer.
Download the latest installer for HP Mediasmart DVD from the HP software and downloads page for your model. Use a utility such as 7-ZIP to extract the contents of the installer (right click the installer, select 7-Zip and then select extract files and click ok). Open the extracted folder and open a folder called src, near the bottom of the list double click the setup application to start the installation.
Let me know how you get on.
Best wishes,
DP-K

Hi... I have an HP Pavilion dv6500 laptop with DVD Failure. It has power and opens but just won't play anything. Is there something that I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance for your help.

I received my laptop (dv7-4070us) about a month ago. I never used the optical drive yet until last night. I placed a blu-ray disc in and nothing happened. I tried to run HP Mediasmart and it said drive was empty. I went to watch it today and couldn't get it to load so I tried to play a regular DVD got the same message saying "no disc in drive". This happened with regular DVD and Blu-ray any help would be great. If I go to check "my computer" it shows the F: but says insert disc.
