DavidPK, tried both procedures and to no avail, there was no immediate recognition of an inserted disc so went to the laptop's drive page and click on the E drive, optical drive, and the message reads insert disc, tried several types of disc and no recognition. The "Fixits" and the drive's trouble shooter all state that the drive is working but, it also advises to insert a disc into drive even tho a disc resides therein. It's nutz. Thanks.

To carlamont and rtrtpwdt,
As I'm unsure from where in this thread you have read from and hence which processes you have already tried, I am going to re-post the main steps so far. If you have not tried this from start to finish please try again starting below.
If you have Comodo Firewall installed please post back and do not carry on with the processes below.
Try downloading and installing Revo Uninstaller on the link below ( if you don't already have it ).
http://www.revouninstaller.com/download-freeware-v
Run the program to uninstall HP Mediasmart DVD. Right click on the entry and select uninstall accepting the program defaults. During the process you may be asked to delete some registry entries, if you are, select all and delete. Repeat this for any left over files and folders. Reboot the computer.
Next download and install ccleaner on the link below ( if you haven't already ).
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
First run the file clean up utility and then run the registry cleaner making sure to backup when asked. Repeat the registry cleaner until 'Scan for Issues' finds nothing.
Reboot the computer.
Download the latest installer for HP Mediasmart DVD from the HP software and downloads page for your model. Use a utility such as 7-ZIP to extract the contents of the installer (right click the installer, select 7-Zip and then select extract files and click ok). Open the extracted folder and open a folder called src, near the bottom of the list double click the setup application to start the installation. When the installation is complete, reboot your PC.
Let me know how you get on, especially any errors you may encounter re-installing MediaSmart DVD.
Best wishes,
DP-K

Here is the latest Media Smart DVD that will work on any model.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp49489
If you are using a virtual player like Virtual Clone Drive then this older version works better.

@ DavidPk
It's nice to have someone else help out with Media Smart DVD and Blu-ray playback issues, as well as DVD. There are many in this boat and some threads that go on for 4 or 5 pages or more to which I have found no solution for.
It's nearly impossible to tell what goes wrong in these cases as there are so many variables involved. A poster had a new machine to which some IT Tech guys had installed some software and since then she lost her Blu-ray player.
Here is that thread.
In this case it;s like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. The solution would be to restore the laptop back to factory and install the software a bit a time to find out what caused the problem. However this was not an option.
So if you ever get board on a rainy afternoon, you know what to do.
I think the person has given up though.

DavidPK, followed instructions closely but, programs appear to work but, but , cannot get this optical disc player and burner to recognized any disc I load. It's like it is not reading those loaded. I noticed that when looking at the disc in device manager it shows, with no disc loaded, that the capacity is 100 % full. Never saw this before on my PC"s. Since e this is a new laptop, not familiar with this. Is there a very easy methos to determine if infared is working? Or something else I can try to get this situation corrected? Thanks.

@HaggisCat,
Always good to hear from you. I should have said before, but yours was the first post I read on this Forum when I was having issues with MediaSmart DVD. It was your reference to Comodo firewall that pointed me towards the solution as i'd had a program in the past that wouldn't run unless added as an exclusion to Image Execution Control. I'll certainly have a look at the thread in the link you've given, but as you said, a lot of these Mediasmart/Quickplayer issues are like finding a needle in a haystack.
Well it's not rainy and it's getting near midnight here...............but I've got to have a look!!
Keep Well. My best wishes as always,
DP-K

@ carlamont
I am not sure what you are looking at, but the device manager under DVD/CD Rom-drives shouldn't be showing any thing like that, 100% full or empty. This is very confusing.
If you go to "Computer" it may show it as 100% full.
Could you post a screen shot of what your looking at that's 100% full.
Something that was not tried through out this thread was the reseating of the drive itself. To do this is very easy and requires a small Philips screw driver. Eject the DVD/CD drawer, leave it open and shut down the laptop.
Turn the laptop over and remove the battery. The drive is held in place by a single screw with a symbol where the screw is; a circle with a small dot in the center with a line from the edge of the circle to the dot.
Look for that symbol. Remove the screw and pull gently and firmly on the drawer for removal. Boot the laptop up and shut it down. Insert the drawer back into its slot and make sure its seated properly; replace the screw. Remember to replace the battery.
Boot the laptop up and see if this procedure helps.
