Not much left to do.

Go to the Device Manager in the control panel and see if it's there and there are no warning signs to indicate that the driver has gone missing. It will be under CD/DVD - ROM drives.

What is the drive letter assigned to it in "Computer" It should look similar to this.

 Drive Letter.PNG

What's important is that it should be the first item under " Devices with Removable Storage right after "Hard Disk Drives".

Also, if you are running W7, service pack 1 has been released, was that installed ?

Re: HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx has stopped recognizing the DVD-Blu/CDROM

Yes, the drive is listed as you show.  first device in the removable storage...  even listed as BD-ROM.

All windows updates are installed in good fashion.

The device manager shows no warning signals.

from the software / machine standpoint it acts as if everything is in order.  Until a disc is put in the drive....then every style of disc is read as not an appropriate disc.

this happened in midplay of a movie.  which has played fine in all other machines and blurays.

I was working night shift in my office at the hospital and it seemed to coincide with some windows updating as far as temporally which is set up for mid-early mornings.

I have done enough building of computers (desktops etc.) that this seemed as if software corruption occurred.  Doesn't smack of physical or mechanical ( in the if you were sitting at the machine side   --- sense of things)

Have you tried installing a trial Blu-ray player. Don't use one from Cyberlink as it's too close to Media Smart DVD.

 Use Arc Soft

Have you tried the obvious and picked a Windows restore point to where it was working ?

Maybe the drive itself has failed, do you you have another HP laptop that you can try it in ?

Check "Autoplay" in the control panel.

I will keep throwing ideas at you no matter how simplistic they may seem. I find that it starts people thinking in another direction.

Have you tried burning a DVD with it ?

Try installing Image Burn and  see if the drive will create ISO files with a Blu-ray disk. You will get a warning that Image Burn can't do this, but continue and let it dead the whole disc. Let me know if that works and I will give you the software to play the movie from the ISO files.

Use mirror 8 provided by Image Burn.

What version of Media Smart DVD are you running ?

----Will give that a whirl when I return home.

Have you tried the obvious and picked a Windows restore point to where it was working ?  -------Windows 7, in that particular machine isn't letting me dial back for an earlier restore point..... it isn't even letting me see dates....Believe me I would have been happy to dial back a week or two.  Not sure why, Havent been able to dig in that direction....was trying to be careful about not digging a deeper hole before moving all important work files and stuff to a different machine before toying with windows deeper.

Maybe the drive itself has failed, do you you have another HP laptop that you can try it in ?-----have several HPs...might try that soon.

Check "Autoplay" in the control panel.----have done the autoplay fixes that have been proposed in other chains of similar problems....no avail.

I will keep throwing ideas at you no matter how simplistic they may seem. I find that it starts people thinking in another direction.     --------Believe me, I appreciate it, just as long as it doesn't devolve into .....Is the machine plugged in?   :smileywink:

Have you tried burning a DVD with it ?   Not yet, that is a good idea.

Try installing Image Burn and  see if the drive will create ISO files with a Blu-ray disk. You will get a warning that Image Burn can't do this, but continue and let it dead the whole disc. Let me know if that works and I will give you the software to play the movie from the ISO files.

What version of Media Smart DVD are you running ?  Was using the most recent release......then uninstalled it and went back a few versions... to one that was linked to in another similar thread.

Thanks.

Re: HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx has stopped recognizing the DVD-Blu/CDROM

Keep me posted.

I like this version, although I don't think it's a problem with Media Smart.

It's a few versions back, but so far it has played all and any Blu-ray's that I can throw at it and it works well with Virtual Clone Drive, the newer versions will not.

Re: HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx has stopped recognizing the DVD-Blu/CDROM

I have had the same problem, except mine just wouldn't play Blu-Rays after the first one I watched. I downloaded the versiom of MediaSmart that you suggested and now it works! It still shouldn't be that way and HP needs to fix it.

Re: HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx has stopped recognizing the DVD-Blu/CDROM

YouTube searching told me how to buy a cheap third party replacement;  IMPROVEMENT at a cheaper price than HP.  Put the old HP face plate onto the third-party Blu-ray read-write drive.  Seems easy & cheap.

My preference is to eBay buy the USB external Blu-ray read-write drive.  Then it's flexible for transport, devices, etc.  Price from Taiwan was about $100 US - a few weeks ago.  It does not neeed an external power supply, is tiny & easily portable.

Re: HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx has stopped recognizing the DVD-Blu/CDROM

I'm having the exact same issue..

I first noticed it a couple of months ago and restored my computer to an earlier point. It worked in that my drive was showing up once more, however it corrupted some files for my google chrome browswer and iTunes and I had to download and reinstall both programs.

I noticed the other day that once again my BD-R drive was missing.. I followed the same steps as above, but this time I noticed that right after I reinstalled iTunes my drive disappeared once more. I don't know if it's related to the problem somehow or if it's purely coincidental.

I have scoured the web for troubleshooting tips or "fixes" and have tried everything under the sun with no luck. I'm starting to get really frustrated and wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I've only had the computer since October of 2010. Thanks!
