Re: HP Pavilion DVD MediaSmart Not reading Blu-Rays

I've tried the procedure as described above installing & Removing Power DVD multiple times, deleting and not deleting Smart Media DVD player, on my  DVD 4077cl but it won't play blu ray. I've combed and read other threads and see it's a very common problem; very disappointing to see a World Class company in this poor scenario- dissatisfied customers, ineffective corrective actions,.

I've been trying all day, even attempting different players, such as, digiaty's da player as suggested elesewhere , with no avail.

I've tested regular DVDs on the Power DVD 10 player and they play but my RedBox Blu Ray DVDs don't.play. I receive a comment that the format is not compatible. I've tried activating .m2ts files directly also and get the same message..

My first step was to  upgrade the software for the HP Smart Media DVD player but that would have been too simple. The HP service center informed me they would try to fix it for $59 which would be refunded if it didn't work; I declined it, but may have to try that next.

Re: HP Pavilion dv7 MediaSmart Not reading Blu-Rays

I had a similar problem.  The player worked on normal disc, but not on bluray.  I was getting a screen that kept asking if I would like to upgrade the player  When I clicked yes, the screen went blank, MediaSmart would start doing its arc thing and the same question would come up again, and Again, and AGAIN.  i contacted HP and was told that in all likely hood my registry was corrupted and for the monomial fee of $90 (a one time fix) or for $15/mo. for a year they thought they could fix it.   I was told that as new BluRays contain new security measures, and this could be an ongoing problem.  I had the same problem on my LG BluRay player and they sent me a cd containing the needed upgrade at no cost.  Guess which brand I will be purchasing from now on.

Re: HP Pavilion dv7 MediaSmart Not reading Blu-Rays

Thanks for the reply, It's right on. I've down loaded a Trial version of Power DvD 12, (costs 40$ to upgrade from v. 10 , that HP recommended to replace Smart Media) but it also didn't play RedBox Blu ray DVDs.
I contacted 'Cyber... Something ' , Power DvD 10 / 12 producer ( also produces reportedly HP's Smart Media Program) & they requested info , & then more.
In the meantime RedBox provided 5 free credit movies for my troubles.
I then went to WalMart & bought a Blu ray disk (Jacobs Ladder), which was primary cheap & interesting, for further testing.;It actually played.
I now need to see if it'll play on the free V 10. I checked the Blu Ray icon & it's the same as the one on Red Box DVDs but this movie was produced in 1990 & I don't know when it was released in Blu ray.
As you mentioned , it's very likely newer Blu Rays have been coded differently, & Microsoft Windows 7 does not have rights for it.
I've spent 10 hrs on this issue and have made little progress. I have a Samsung BR HT and never encountered this problem.
I also came to the same conclusion about HP and reflected it back to them; to the rep & a feedback survey they sent me.
I wonder where the cut off is with the new coding and why other computer Blu Ray player programs, sold as the ultimate player, cant play new BR DVDs.
I'll re-post if I succeed. Thanks.

Re: HP Pavilion dv7 MediaSmart Not reading Blu-Rays

Im pissed off, and sick of dealing with this crap from you HP. its always something and im sick of it. Why the hell is my Blu-Ray player not working?? I paid good money for this and it seems like im not the only one dealing with this crap.

I put in a BD and it reads for a second then says:

"The content is protected. This content is not allowed to play in the current display mode."

what the hell does that mean?

DVDs work fine but not Blu-Rays?? what the hell. why even bother putting one in if the **bleep** thing never works!!!

Re: HP Pavilion dv7 MediaSmart Not reading Blu-Rays

I've run into a wall as well. Why include a BluRay if you can't use it? Here's what I've done, following instructions on message boards:

1. Set restore point.

2. Tried to uninstall MediaSmart DVD from Control Panel. Unsuccessful, got error about a missing definition file. Gotta love software that's so bad you can't even uninstall it without an error.

3. Did safe boot, tried to delete all MediaSmart DVD files. Restarted and ran a registry cleaner (cccleaner). Still can't get rid of it out of the Control Panel. Gave up on MediaSmart DVD.

4. Installed Cyberlink's PowerDVD program. It wouldn't run my DVD so I installed their analyzer, which said that I have the wrong connection type from my computer to monitor. I'm using a DisplayPort link, but PowerDVD says that it can only play protected DVDs (great) with an HDMI or DVI connection. After 2.5 hours working on this I give up, and have neither of those cables available. Nor should I need to in order to play a BluRay on my HP computer.

Any other options?

Re: HP Pavilion dv7 MediaSmart Not reading Blu-Rays

I have much of the same problem. I have a HP dv7 blu-ray player. i have tried two blu rays, one was "captain america" from red box. that took me forever to get working cause i had to update cyberlink and then it wouldnt let me apply the update for a while. eventuall i got it working though. now i was given "lord of the rings" trilogy blu-ray as a gift." I ahve only tried the first one, it will play up to the title screen and it will play the music and everything but then it will not let me play the movie!!! it will not let me press any of the buttons on the title screen. I cant press play, i cant go to special features or chapter search. its very very frustrating. has anyone had any problems like that? if so how did you deal with them??
