I'm a hardcore PC/Laptop user, but not when it comes to media. I just bought a laptop for my wife and it comes with Mediasmart. I've never heard of this before, and I've searched high and low for the technical details, but I'm coming up empty handed.
I emailed HP technical support, and so far they have sent me links to a Touchsmart demo (using mediasmart), Mediasmart Connect, Mediasmart Server LX195 updates, and the 'what you can do with Mediasmart' page. None of which help understand how the software on the laptop works.
It's really great to know that I can access streaming content from the internet, so I fire it up and if figures out how to access all this content??? (just kidding)
Normally I'd just fire it up, and see what happens, but this is a christmas present, so it's got a few weeks of hiding first, then I'd like to be able to say 'look what it does' and be able to make it do something useful.
Can someone direct me to anything that can actually tell me how this software works? Do I have to have a Mediashare Server? Does it integegrate with Windows 7 Homegroup sharing? Does it work with other software such as MyMovies? Can I access multiple different sources, or is it a client to another device (such as the mediashare server)?
I just recently built a new desktop (WIn 7 Pro) specifically to support media streaming for a new BR/streaming player (does not use Win homegroup) and DLNA TV, and it sure would be nice if I could get the new laptop to play nice with this.
I can't believe that it's this hard to find out what it takes to make use of this software. I'm sure it's no big deal, but I sure can't find that answer myself, so far.

Peruse the HP MediaSmart videos on Youtube Perhaps you will find exactly what you are looking for amongst them.

Thanks for the reply, but there is nothing there (that I found) that explains what you need to make use of the MediaSmart software if you've never seen, nor heard of it before. I am quite sure than when my wife opens this next week, and clicks on the MediaSmart icon, there will be nothing, for obvious reasons.
I am still baffeled that there is no reference for what you need, OUT OF THE BOX.
After many hours of searching, and a week of non-sense with HP email support, I've got a basic understanding. It certainly appears that you need a MediaSmart Server (running on Win Home Server??) to use this software, but not even HP email support could answer that question.

Like you, i have just purchased a laptop for my mother for christmas. I wanted to get it all set up for her, put some of her cd's, photos on for example.
Having read the reviews for the machine and software i thought it would be ideal. but i have been playing the "hunt the user guide" game . just like yourself, i find it absurd that such little thought has been given to this subject by hp. i'm glad it's not just me having this problem. there is an address below to the best i can find, which is still pretty poor, any way good luck and if you do find anything perhaps you could let the world know

I stumbled onto this old thread after pulling out my hair searching for a User Guide/Manual for the HP MediaSmart application (NOT for the older MediaSmart Server systems) for Desktop PCs & Laptops. Here is a link for MediaSmart Version 3:
