Quick launch buttons use in different window

I am new to Hp support forums so please excuse any mistakes. I would like to know if it possible to have iTunes running in the background and skip, play and pause songs when I am in a different window eg. firefox. I have downloaded lastest drivers but it didn't do anything, my friend who has a dell XPS 16 is able to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
