HP Pavilion DV9220US using Vista Home Premium. I attempted to run Angry Birds on Chrome with an external monitor attached to the laptop. After one or two screens of the game, the monitors flashed and the external monitor only will work. But only in low resolution. The laptop screen has some light (Glows) but no display.

I have tried to run the  System Recovery DVD and it can't run due to an error with a command at a particular memory.

If the external monitor still works, would that mean the video card would be shot or not?

Hi,

No, otherwise the external monitor can't display anything.

Any ideas on how to get the laptop display to turn on? I know it has to be a driver, but I should can't figure it out.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi,

It has driver otherwise you can NOT use external monitor. Now, go to Display settings and bring the screen #1 back.

  • Right click a blank area on your desktop,
  • For XP, use Display Properties, for Vista & Windows 7 use Personalize,
  • Change "Display settings" from #2 to #1

Good luck,

That in lies the problem. Under Display Settings there is only one monitor listed. Not two. And the one shown is only the external. I need to get the second (laptop) monitor to be shown as an option.

But I do appreciate your assistance.

With a risk of being removed from the site, I have to say that HP laptops are prone to problems with the graphics chip, especially nVidia GPUs with AMD CPUs.  The AMD/nVidia combination is the hottest and HP's laptop cooling is barely adequate at best.

All it takes is a bit of dust and fluff to accumulate on the fan blades (or for people to use their laptop on a soft surface such as a carpet, rug, sofa, etc) and the cooling system is no longer able to cool the CPU/GPU pair effectively.  (Both CPU and GPU use the same heat sink in almost all laptops).

Due to environmental regulations, all manufacturers must now use lead-free solder in the construction of PCBs, but lead-free solder is far more brittle than leaded solder, and repeated thermal stress will eventually fracture some BGA (ball grid array) connections.

Symptoms can include:

Repeated power cycling every few seconds with no display; Switches on for half a second then goes off again; Boots fine but no display; Corrupted graphics; Completely dead; Blank laptop panel but external output works OK; Display only works without drivers installed; Screen goes black after the laptop has warmed up...

A short-term solution may be to "reflow" the GPU (heating it up until the solder melts and 're-sticks'), but the best method is to "re-ball" the chip with leaded solder (63/37 tin/lead) and re-mount it.  A simple but effective modification to the cooling system can also help prevent the same problem from recurring.

This is a specialist job and should not be undertaken by anyone but a specialist, otherwise you are likely to destroy the GPU and/or the motherboard.

If you do a bit of research, you should find somewhere to do it for less than £60 (US $80).

laptop monitor has black lower right corner like a very small corner of the moon.  Have been having difficulty with the screen being black until I hooked up a second monitor then they both came into view. Will I be continuing to have difficulties?
