Unfortunately this is not my computer nor am I any where near it. My mother is having a problem with her HP laptop, where it boots OK, but then after several minutes goes to a grey screen with light grey lines on it. I don't live near her, and I've tried to talk her through some diagnostic steps, but it's ... a challenge. I did remote to her computer using Teamviewer and was on line when it went to the grey screen on her end, but on my end I saw that it lost Internet access as well.
You sohuld understand that I haven't even been able to get her to start it in Safe Mode, because it takes her too long to do anything, and it auto-boots regularly if she doesn't hit safe mode boot in time. My options are limited.
Any suggestions? I don't know what model laptop she has (and she can't figure that out....) but she is running Windows Vista. She bought the laptop around 2009 or 2010.

the inverter that connects the screen of the laptop to the board is bad. the inverter (can be found just below the screen when the case covering the screen is opened) should be changed
