First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Check if the drive will now play DVDs correctly.
If it isn't, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager. Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall. Do not delete drivers if asked. When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ). Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now plays DVDs OK.
If it still doesn't play your discs correctly, it may be worth trying to reset Windows Media Player as follows.
Click the Start Menu and select Control Panel. Open Programs and Features, Click 'Turn Windows features on or off', open up Media Features and untick Windows Media Player. Click Yes then OK and then restart the notebook.
When Windows has restarted, click the Start Menu and select Control Panel. Open Programs and Features, Click 'Turn Windows features on or off', open up Media Features and tick Windows Media Player. Click Yes then OK and when WMP has finished installing, restart the notebook again.
