I have a HP DV7-6C90US and have attempted to upgrade to a better wireless card Centrino Advanced N-6230 with no luck. I have tried HP Part 636672-001, and the unit will display "Wireless Module not supported" WLAN Module ID (702) during boot. Based on several other posts in the forum, the wireless card has to be added to a "White List". I have had a HP case manager assigned (same one) twice and spent a couple of hours with the same result-the card is not compatible. Same thing happened during a online chat-tech said card is not compatible. In maintenance and service guide for the DV7, it lists the card as compatible. This seems to be a common problem when trying to upgrade the wireless card. My question is can the card be added to the "white list"? Seems to me that HP put a low end wireless card in my higher end notebook. The current card Centrino 1030 is slow and doesn't support 5Ghz. That is surprising was told to just use a USB adapter, but have heard that will cause problems with Intel WiDi. I thought this would be a simple upgrade, but it has turned in to a frustrating problem. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry but the list is configured when the devices are tested at the design stage.Only wireless modules tested and approved for the notebook will be on the whitelist.
Once the PC is manufactured the whitelist is no longer updated.

So there is no way to upgrade the wireless card from HP? I am surprised that HP put such a low end wireless card in what they are marketing as the Ultimate Mobile performance and entertainment machine. The card doesn't even support 5Ghz. What is weird the notebook is currently shipping and the Centrino 6230 (the next level wireless card intel provides) is blocked from working. Guess the DV7 service guide is wrong in listing the Centrino 6230 card. Guess they saved a few bucks by going with a low end wireless card. I had a 3year old HDX16 and it supported 5Ghz. I have seen in other forums, that people Modify the ROM to make it work. I am frustrated customer who just wants to upgrade the wireless card to something better. I don't want to use a USB adapter or Modify the BIOS. So HP never updates the whitelist after shipping?

There are multiple cards that can be used, and there is a version of the Intel 6230 available which is on the whitelist. However the part number I have is different than yours. Only the cards supported in the builds of the product are on the list, and since they are tested for interference and other factors, one cannot be easily added.
One of the confusing things on "DV7" is that it actually has a large number of different system boards available. When looking at the service and maintenance guide I got the following for your unit:

I have already ordered 631956-001 and returned it as it was the same card that I already have Centrino N-1030. The service guide had the wrong part number. I call HP Parts and they verified that the 6230 part was 636672-001. Maybe that is the problem is 6230 is not correctly indentified in the current white list. I have tried the most recent BIOS F.16 and am getting the same error. Thanks for you help!

There is so much confusing and wrong info on this subject.
I have a relatively new DV7-6B32US puchased on 11/2011.
I called tech support and with their help identified Intel Centrino 6230 as the correct upgrade, and with their help ordered 631956-001. In the Maintenance Manual for DV7 laptop, this part number was listed for Intel Centrino 6230. Turns out HP sends an Intel Wireless N 1030 card, which is no better than my existing card. I called HP and they acknowledged that some manuals use part number 631956-001 for Centrino 6230 and some use 631956-001 for INtel 1030. So HP support said they would give refund but case manager was of no help in solving the upgrade problem. Said it was unavailable but here is your money back.
I have been thru 2 tech support calls and one case manager and have gotten 3 different feedback from HP, from yes it will work and ordering the part, to buy it on amazon, to it will not work and here is your money back.

Yes the service guide lists 631956-001 as a Intel Centrino 6230, but it really is a Intel Centrino 1030. I guess my question is does the Intel Centrino 6230 need to be included in the "Whitelist" as part 636672-001 and not 631956-001? Sounds like the Centrino 6230 might be listed in the whitelist as 631-956-001. Guess someone from HP will have to check that. Thanks.

I was following this post as I've seem to have fallen into the same pitfall as everyone else. I had the very under powered Intel Centrino 1030 N card in my computer, which for the price I paid for it is very dissapointing. I took the initiative and looked up the computers guide to find exactly the same incorrect information for the replacement cards for the DV-7's. I own a DV7-6179us and according to the manual I should be able to upgrade to the Intel 6230 part number listed for this is the 631956-001. I ordered this part, which took about a week to get here only to find I recieved another 1030 N card, which is the exact same card that came with the computer. All I want is an upgraded card that I can actually use. Especially since I tend to do heavy HD video streaming, which the current card gives up on. There has to be a solution I just want more information, and with out question for HP to make this right. I've been a long standing HP customer and I'm steps away from cutting the plug on this company and moving on to better designed systems with clearly more service and upgrade options.
I'm going to send the card back and I'd like to excahnge for the 6230 N P/N# 636672-001 if it even works. I just don't want to waste more time and money on another card that won't work in my computer anyways due to the whitelist restrictions. I'd just like to know before I kill anymore time and money on this dilema.
Also if the parts recommened don't work or don't match the HP Parts surfer site than remove the manual and correct the issues, so you can avoid pain for any of your future customers and current ones.
If anyone from HP or anything else has anymore insight or help on this issue I'm open to a solution, that hopefully brings my notebook to the standard I expect.
I did try a bios rewrite on my old HP attempting to upgrade the wireless card to a better class as well and ended up bricking the computer. So, that is clearly out of the question on my relatively new HP laptop.
