I'm having the same trouble with my brand new 8460p that has been discussed here a lot: the brightness of the display can not be adjusted with the function keys (fn+F-keys) while in Windows. In other threads the problem has been solved by installing newest chipset drivers (which was not provided by HP), but in these threads the computer has been an earlier model. 8460p has the new QM67 express chipset and currently I'm running the latest drivers (according to intel's detection web site) for it.

So, does anyone have any solution how I might be able to fix this annoying little issue?

I'm running a fresh install of Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit with all the latest drivers.

Hi,

The FN Keys are not directly related to the chipset. Try to reinstall the following driver: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=32... .

Also, install HP Support Assistant: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=32... and check for updates.

Best regards,

Andrew

Huh, Installing the Hot Key driver did the trick. Apparently I was missing it completely as the Support Assistant had not suggested installing it. What confused me was the fact that some of the FN keys (namely suspend and volume control) did work from the start without the Hot Key driver.

Probelm solved, cheers!

Hi I couldnt get it to work even having updated as above. However I finally found that the service in computer management - service called hpHotkeyMonitor was set as a manual start and wasnt running. Changed it to automatic and started the service, after which the display brightness function keys worked!

My hpHotkeyMonitor service was stopped, too. Restarting it brought my hotkeys back. Thanks!

BTW, I first tried re-installing the above driver, but my system said I already had a newer version installed!

I have an HP EliteBook 8560w laptop.

I don't have the service in the services list.  I have installed both the latest chipset drivers and the Hotkey Drivers as well.. is there anything else that i'm missing?

Hi DucatiDesmo,

I understand you are having issues with function keys not working on your EliteBook 8460p. If you follow this document on The Fn + Function Key Combination it will help resolve your issue. Check on the Disable or enable fn in the BIOS.

Hope this helps.

I have the same issue, except that in my case the only function key that works is "sleep".  The hpHotkeyMonitor service is running.  Trying to install the driver (current version or update) results in "This software is not supported on this computer", and trying to repair the installation from Add/Remove programs results in "Fatal error during Installation". The installed version is 4.0.18.1, and running under Win XP Pro.  Any ideas anyone?

I run Linux on an 8530p.  The Fn keys to turn the ambient light sensor on and off work, but when the sensor is turned off, the keys to make the screen brighter do not work.  When the sensor is on the screen dims unpredictably.  I suspect a hardware problem with the sensor.

I found an odd solution to this which is quick and easy to try: make sure the ambient light sensor is turned on, then cover the brightness sensor with your thumb and apply a few pulses of moderate pressure to the case with your thumb while doing so.  This brings my screen up to full brightness pretty reliably, and it stays there after removing my thumb.  I doubt there's an actual button under there, but if this is a common problem with a flakey connection to the sensor, maybe it will help someone.
