A diagnostic test was run and the smart short self test failed, what is that and is it essential?

I have an HP Pavilion p6320f pc desktop I am running windows 7. Nothing that I can see changed. Haven't had a problems, but upon the diagonistic test the above and the the statement "smart short self test failed".

I had the same problem with my wife's computer. It is less than 2 years old. I spent 30-40 minutes online with tech support. The tell me that the hard drive is ging bad. Choices: send to them and 2-300 $ later I get a rebuilt computer and likely without my files. 2) replace the hard drive myself. 3) buy a new 'puter. 4) backup files routinely and keep giong.
I have backed up files and rebooted. Ran another diagnostic test and it seems to be running fine with only a small bac sector.
I suggest u also make a list of the programs that u have added and know what u want to replace if and when u need to.
