Can't make a password reset disk

HP Pavilion a6009n desktop. . .

I created a new account on my computer and I'm trying to do what the subject line suggests using the wizard, but when I get to the part where there is a drop-down list entitled "make disk on this drive" (or something similar), my DVD drive is not on the list. It is listed in "Computer", and I use it all the time so I know it works correctly. Anyone know how to remind the wizard that the drive exists?

Re: Can't make a password reset disk

Why do you want it on a DVD? The password reset thing's only about 50KB, put it on a USB or even a floppy if you have one, works fine from there. I assume this is your logon password you're saving. That's probably the reason why the wizard won't let you, but if you're really that desperate to have it on a 4.7GB DVD then create it on a USB and copy the file onto the DVD.

Re: Can't make a password reset disk

Thanks for the reply Anon. I was thinking of a CD, not a DVD. I have since learned that MS has not given that functionality so I put it on a flash stick. Thanks anyway for the suggestion. (Do people still use floppies?)

Re: Can't make a password reset disk

Thanks, I was just highlighting that it was a bit pointless using a huge great big CD-R for a tiny file. Most people don't use floppies, but they still have uses. They're vital for setting up RAID configurations in XP for example or something like that. Also, if you want to give someone else a document or a presentation say, what do you do? You either give them a flash drive, which are pretty expensive if you don't get them back, and which has LOADS of wasted space on it if you just put on a document, or you put it on a floppy, where it doesn't matter if you don't get it back because they're practically free. You can also create a pretty useless MS-DOS startup disk on one, which you can't on a flash drive without special software. However, flash is better for backup as it can't be wiped by a good set of speakers like floppies can, but you can lose it more easily. I was disappointed with the failure to include either a floppy drive or the drive bay to put one in on my computer, so I used one of the spare holes for expansion cards in the back of the machine and routed the cables through there! Glad you thought my advice was (vaguely) useful.

Re: Can't make a password reset disk

I need help on this topic. I stupidly did not enter a password when  I set up my user account on my new computer. So, I wanted to create one and found out I had to create a password reset disc. I put a SanDisk USB 2.0 flash Drive into the USB slot in the front of my computer (it recognized it as drive k: - but the Wizard wants me to put something in drive F: or drive G:   I am new to Windows 7, and I tried to find the familiar "tree"(that I don't know where to find anymore)  that led me to find out what drives besides the DVD D drives were located on my new PC, and where I could find them - or why the drive was called drive K :  - where to find drive F: if it wasn't the name of the drive I put the flash drive in?  I am competent on the computer, but haven't  had any recent computing experience (my last PC ran Windows 98 - but I have XP experience).  Just need some help and need to be pointed in the right direction.  THanks.
