Can't turn on computer, please help! (Compaq Presario S5000NX)

Compaq Presario S5000NX (desktop)

 

Fan spins for about a second, light next to power button turns on for a second then off again. Light by the power cord flickers then dies when you press the power button-when you stop trying to turn on the computer the light is solid.

 

I had this computer for around 4 years, bought from a rental place. As of a year ago the computer would be slow on and off for no apparent reason. For a few weeks recently it sometimes didn't want to turn on, then after a few tries did turn on, now it doesn't come on period.

 

I need to fix it ASAP as my husband has all his college work on it (only half is backed up to a removable drive)...

 

EDIT: (Also the CD drive as of a few weeks ago didn't always open when you press the button)

Turn it off, unplug it, and remove the side panel to see if  dust has collected around the fan areas. If there is a lot of duct inside the cooling fins of the processor, there may be heat damage. First thing to do, would be to clean it - especially inside the power supply vents and around the processor.
