Compaq Preasrio SR5721NL - Ping/Lag spike in Source Engine Games

Hey there,

I recently bought a Compaq Preasrio SR5721NL, here's the specs:

Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2220 (2.40GHz) processor

Busspeed / Cache: 800 MHz / 1 MB

Hard disk: 320 GB

RAM: 4 GB

Optical drive: DVD-rewriter (+ /rw) DL Lightscribe
GFX Card: NVIDIA® GeForce G100 PureVideo HD (would be replaced soon)

Video Memory: 256 MB

(for more details please just ask)

I bought it specificly to be able to play games that run on the (Half Life 2) Source engine,

and now it turns out that my ping goes from my standard 15 up to 900 every one or two

minutes. I tried disabling services and processes that use internet, but the problem remains.

At first i suspected the GFX card since it's not that good for gaming, but then i realised the

problem only occurs in source games, and is connection related, not gfx related. I wouldnt like

having to return it to the store, if this problem keeps up i will have to do so.

My question now is quite simple: how do i get rid of this incredibly frustrating problem?

I really hope to get some useful answers in this thread, thanks in advance,

Simon.

Return it. That is not built for gaming. If you want a real gaming rig you should build your own. In order for you to get better performance you would need to upgrade the processor, video card and power supply. Though you might not think the GFX is the issue, it plays a big part. That and maybe your internet speed.

To increase performance turn off extras like windows sidebar and windows aero which are huge resource hogs.
