A friend has a Compaq Presario SR5510F which has been acting strange for the past week or so. Sometimes it would boot up and sometimes it wouldn't. Right now, it will POST and start to boot into WIndows. When it gets to the screen with the animated Windows Logo, it just shuts off.
Just wondering if this is a power supply issue or a motherboard issue.

Not sure yet but I don't this this is power supply related. Since you can boot it up sometimes, try to check the logs at Event Viewer.
At Run, type eventvwr.msc. ![]()

Can't as the machine never gets that far in the boot sequence. Yes, it does point to power supply, but I don't want to take the time or money to experiment only to find out it's the motherboard.

GGRussell,
The power supply is a standard ATX:http://www.power-on.com/atx12v250bt.html

Unfortunately, none of that info is helpful. The hard drive is detected and Windows does start to boot. Everything seems normal until about a minute into launching Windows, the machine just shuts off. Was hoping to find a way to determine if it is a motherboard issue or not. I would rather buy a new computer than spend too much on fixing this one. It's for a 90yr old that likes to play Majong. ![]()

Have you opened the unit, and cleaned out all the dust-bunnies?
You will need to pull the power cord. Use a can of compressed air, and clean the fans. Pop off the front cover, and clean the facing and bottom intakes.
You keep saying "shuts off". Is the Power Supply still on?

I clean it out every few months as general maintenance. So not over heating. I will have to check on that second issue. Can do that later today and get back.
Thanks

JUst getting back - This issue seems to be random. Sometimes it won't boot at all. Sometimes it will run for a few hours, but the eventually shuts down. The little green light on the power supply is ON. This seems to point to a thermal overload on the motherboard or perhaps some other issue. The inside is very clean and I made sure the CPU cooler was clean.
