But now i am left with a black screen with the message CLDR is compressed then underneath Press Ctrl+Alt+del to restart when i try this i just get the Compaq sign with a choice of F1 Set up or F10 System recovery , i dont know what to do i wish i had never touched it

What is the Model name and product number of your PC?
Which CPU is in your PC? Intel or AMD?
Did your PC come with two HP System Recovery cds?
System Recover on Startup is indeed an option, but better if you have the Recovery CDs.
F10 System Recovery (this is unusual because most HP pcs use the F11 keystroke for this purpose) will access the recovery parition on your hard disk and enable you to access the HP Recovery Manager and restore your system to OEM software state.
You need to be aware that all of the data you had stored on your PC will be destroyed.
When you post the answer to my first question I will be able to link you to the web page that will explain exactly how to recover your pc.

Excellent. There should be one for the OS and another for drivers and software apps.
I could not find the model name that you supplied. Please verify it. How about the product nember?
Are you certain the error message was CLDR compressed or was it NTLDR compressed? If it was NTLDR, it is a recovery console command now that you have the Recovery disc that contains the OS.

Hi you are correct it does say tnldr some of the words were slightly hidden, so i did what you advised me to do, i had to do the alternative part as it wouldnt read the disks because the message wont go. I followed all it said but when i got to no8 it said the system cannot find path specified, i tried to carry on and after no 9 it said 'compact' is not recognised as an internal or external command
Operable program or batch file. Does all this mean my computer is a lost cause.

The name and number are on the same HP sticker on your PC. The first on is the model name and the other has p/n to the left of it. That is the product number. Here is a link on how to findt the information.
Which OS do you have installed?
