Desktop icons all look the same

My desktop icons all look the same. They all have a small blue "e" in front of a white square?? Like if it is read only> When I click on an icon, a window opens and notifies me that the Internet Explorer is not working...Windows is looking for a solution.  iTunes, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, eBay, Windows Media Player,etc...they are different programs and I lost their icons.  All the icons for all the programs look the same on the desktop and the Start Menu.

How can I change back to their individual icons and open them.  I can't open anything now.
