I have since trawled this site and discovered HP have serious problems with the fans installed in some models.
Needless to say after my experience last night I have lost confidence in the product I just purchased. Fortunately I purchased an extended warranty.
In my opinion a second fan should be installed in models such as the one I purchased which I have mentioned in my previous post. This should be at no cost to the purchaser of the PC.
I bought HP because apart from my very first PC all my subsequent ones have been HP. I have only just purchased a new printer earlier this year after my HP printer was just too slow. I had trouble free use for 10 years.
I am an online "Granny" and being on a fixed income a PC at NZ prices is a major purchase. I am worried that my new PC is not going to give me the service I have come to expect from an HP product.

in the first instance you should have a one year warranty so it's a bit early to worry....i suspect this loud noise was not your fan but a disc in your cd/dvd...sometimes these can make amazingly loud whirring noises....fans are highly unlikely to 'spin beyond their settings....
relax and enjoy your new treasure....

Antipodes - I appreciate your input but I assure you the noise was the fan. I am sufficiently experienced to know this. Both times the fan has sounded like an airplane taking off and the PC was in idle mode not being used when it started up. Drive was empty. CD/DVD
I have done a web search and found that I am not the only person this has happened to. It has happened a lot in Compaq mini tower models. HP say in reply to these complaints that there is a slot where another fan can be fitted. As my last PC had two fans fitted I don't know why they fitted only one small fan in my new model. I think mini towers are a lot more likely to overheat. I am kicking myself I never thought about this at the time of purchase being seduced by the space saving possibilities of buying a mini tower system.

naturally, it is assumed on this site that all postees are smart....however, even smarties can overlook the 'oh! there's no paper in the printer' moment.
i am with you...noise is noise is a pain...unacceptable full stop...
this is a tech problem as you or i cannot go opening a computer case whilst it's on...deaths have occurred....
you need to speak to the vendor or if out of warranty, you need a 'computer doctor'.
long live the antipodes...
regards....

Hi everyone. I recently purchased a new HP Pavillion Desktop. The graphics card fan was VERY, VERY noisy almost form day one, and kept getting worse. It was very annoying and disconcerting. Couldn't concentrate. You could hear it all the way through the house. This is the sixth computer I have owned, and I have never had any such problem. It took 4 contacts for HP to finally say they will mail out a new graphics card to me. And, oh by the way, I have to install it myself when it arrives. This was after being made 3 times to open up the computer and poke around, removing and replacing the different parts. What a nightmare. My concern here is this: is not there someting wrong with having a consumer do techninical work a product that is in warrantly? Also, what about liability. What if I had electrocuted myself or other problems occurred? I tried to get someone to explain to me how this cpuld possibly be normal standard practice, and why not have someone come out to my home to repair my computer (or have it shipped or whatever). I got no satisfactory response to this, except that that is the only way to do it.
Also there is a thin black wire running from the top panel of the CPU tower to the inside. This wire is severed, and, for the life of me, I cannot get anyone to tell me what the purpose of that wire is, and what problems may occur since it is broken. All I get is " don't worry ma'am, it is o.k. Don't worry about it." "WHAT!" I wonder what will happen if I called the BBB and reported this. I am very frustrated with this process, and all I want is my money back and to never again buy anoher product from HP.
Has anyone else had a similar problem or concern? Any suggestions as to how to handle this issue? Thanks.

I am sorry to hear about your problem with the HP Pavilion. My sis has just purchased that model. I have an extended warranty with my purchase the retailer gave me an extra year free. I will be able to just take my PC back to the retailer for repair. HP have a 60 day right of return if the product is faulty. At least thats the case here. Check it out with your retailer.
There is a sticker on each tower that clearly states if broken by anyone other than a registered HP serviceperson the guarantee is null and void. Contact the retailer re this. Stand up for your consumer rights.
Good luck.

There is a long know problem with fan noise created by the GeForce 9500 GS video cards which were used in HP Pavilion Elite systems in late 2008 and early 2009 model's. I don't know if this will apply to the problem that you are having, but here is a link to determine if it is a problem with the video card fan.
As I said this may or may not apply to your issue.
If it does a kudo would be appreciated.
Good luck.
Kudo's gratefully accepted if I was of help to you.

I was glad to see that there was an official response to the fan/graphics card noise issue. There had been a notice in the Health Check box regarding this. I hope many people were able to take advantage of it. I finally got my resolved, by the way. However, things got worse before they got better. I tell you, this was not the most pleasant experience I've ever had. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Furthermore, I also noticed that there was an offer to upgrade to Windows 7 up to July 2010, however I missed the window. Does anyone know whether there is a way to still get this offer honored? Or whether it is even worth it? Thanks for any response.
