It seems something is wrong that this thread should be going on for about 2 years with no apparent solution.  I am helping a friend with his hp.  After trying to use hp advisor and having it crash, I finally gave up and restored his computer to the "out of the box configuration".  I then went through the process of updating the windows 7 software, then tried to us the hp advisor to update the HP particular applications / drivers.  hp advisor did the same thing it would not work and I got all the messages outlined by so many people in this thread.  I even removed and redownloaded hp advisor. 

So, as a person who owns 3 HP computers, who has steered friends toward purchasing HP, I am embarrassed that HP is unable to solve this problem. 

It appears there is an immediate fix and that is to remove the hp advisor software and the 2nd is to think about a dell next time I purchase a computer.  I've experienced their equivalent application helping a friend with their computer and it worked as advertised.
