HP Linkup Issue between HP Pavillion and Compaq Presario

I would like to know if anyone can help me.  I got a brand new HP computer and was trying to use HP Linkup to tranfer files from my old computer to my new one.  

Details of the new computer are:

Product Number-QP802AA
Model Number-h8-1124 2.00
OS-Windows 7

Details of the old computer are:

compaq presario SR1030NX

Windows XP

I downoloaded the HP Linkup software on the old computer, created a password and then attempted to connect.  It appeared to connect and the screen on the old computer went blank but the HP Linkup software on the new computer said lost connection even though I could still ping the old computer from the command line.  Well I tried re-booting the old computer and now it gets to the Windows XP screen and looks like it is booting because the hard drive is churning but the screen goes blank and the desktop never comes up. Now what I would really like to do is just to get to the desktop on the old PC and then manually move the files over since I have had so many problems with trying to get the HP Linkup to work.  Please help.

Even though the title says Vista, it will work with most any Windows PC.  Make the Ubuntu CD and see if the old computer will boot to it.  You probably need to enter the setup menu on the WinXP computer and pick DVD/CD drive as first device to boot to the Ubuntu CD.

Thanks to "The Old Man".  The Ubuntu CD worked and I was able to get all of my files off the old PC.  

Now I am going to try to get that old PC operating again.
